Healing natural tissue: The latest technology advances in tissue engineering

Instead of stitches, can you imagine skin adhesive inspired by sticky gecko toes? What about bandages with the diamond-patterned texture of shark skin that accelerate healing? These ideas may sound like science fiction, but healing technologies based on these ideas are already being tested.

Advancements in technology are allowing researchers to not only better understand how natural tissues function, but to experiment with methods to recreate them. Alliance at Oregon Principal Investigator Paul Dalton and KU Leuven collaborators Hannah Haag and Veerle Bloemen review current technologies and techniques being used to engineer bone and cartilage, blood vessels, and nerves, and the strengths and limitations of engineered tissues for healing natural tissues.
